| | Job Search? Get help at the library with Sorkins Directory | | In-depth company profiles for St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City and surrounding
If you’re in the job market, the library has many tools at your disposal. Among them is the Sorkins Directory – available only at the library – both on the computer and in print. It provides a wealth of information with detailed listings of every major public and private company, local subsidiary and government entity.
Descriptions tell the company story, so you can learn about potential employment opportunities. In addition, listings provide executives, managers, officers and boards. Search by name and see if an executive you want to contact is on the board of an organization where you volunteer. There are countless opportunities to learn about the places you may want to work.
In addition to being a tremendous job search tool, Sorkins is also very handy for small business owners looking to expand. Find companies and organizations in the St. Louis area or elsewhere in the Midwest who could use your product or service. Learn the names of people in charge of advertising, sales, marketing, finance and more.
Pat Rohan, Reference Manager at Kirkwood Public Library, calls this one of the most valuable databases available. “I would love people in Kirkwood to realize the potential of this database.” It’s intuitive, so it’s easy to navigate throughout the database. And Rohan says, “It’s the perfect place to start searching or to check before a job interview.”
Remember, the only way to access this database is to go through a computer at the library. We look forward to helping you. |

| | See What Your Neighbors are Thinking | | Check out the front page of the KPL website and participate in a fun poll
Hit the home page on our website, and see what fun and fascinating poll questions await you this month. Be sure to cast your vote on the important topics of the day – or maybe the not-so-important-but-still-interesting topics of the day.
And while you’re there, don’t forget to click the drop-dow n box for additional poll questions. This month, we want to know about your favorite humor writer, graphic novels, your favorite database, and the last time you picked up a tome by the Bard himself. If you don’t know who the Bard is, we already know your answer to that question, but play along anyway.
Results are in from our most recent poll, and we’ve learne d that a lot of folks didn’t realize the library was now on Facebook. Only 9% of 212 responders have become a fan of the library on Facebook .
Newspapers may not be dead yet, but they’re on life support. In our non-scientific poll, when asked where you get your news, only 11% answered from print sources. The most popular answer? News websites, with 37% of the vote.
In other news, gullible people within Kirkwood can enjoy plenty of company as 30% of people responding to our poll admitted to being tricked on April Fool’s Day. Way to go, pranksters!
Finally, we wanted to know if tea, wine or milk & cookies go best with a good book. Apparently, our poll had the correct ingredients because a full 54% of you chose Everything!

| | The Excitement is Starting To Build | | Mark your calendar … wait, wait, don’t mark your calendar yet
Gardens are blooming, birds are singing, and Farmer’s Market is swirling with activity. The usual signs of spring and summer surround us.
But there’s a different buzz this season. People are asking about the renovated library. Walkers are slowing as they take a different route to check the progress of the belove d building. And not a day goes by – okay, not an hour goes by – that staff members don’t get questions about when the library will move back to 140 E. Jefferson.
The answer is (drum roll please) … soon! We’re looking at a date sometime in mid-July. We’ve contacted local movers from right here in Kirkwood. They’re finalizing the move plans and are on standby as construction nears finishing.
As soon as we know an exact date we’ll pass all the news on to everyone in the community. In addition, we’ll let you know about important details like the Book Drop, due dates and of course, our grand opening celebration. Stay tuned. |

If you aren’t already a Friend, you can get an application online or fill out a membership application at the library. Your one-year membership dues (levels range from $25 - $500) enhance the library’s services in so many ways:
- Books for children’s reading programs
- Funding of audiobook purchases
- Continued support of the endowment fund
- Funding of popular library programs
- Spray Finishing Made Simple .”
Us: We love suggestions like this that let us know the type of material that interests our patrons. Keep them coming !
Kirkwood is filled with tradesmen and artisans, and we’re happy to add this book to our collection on woodworking. For that, and other hobbies and interests you have, come check out our extensive collections on both print and DVD.
In fact, the library recently received a grant for Descriptive DVDs to serve patrons who are visually impaired. The grant helped us purchase Descriptive DVDs as well as canvas bags so we can incorporate these materials into our Outreach programs.
We’ll take these to senior residential homes in the Kirkwood area, specifically the Mary Culver Home for the Visually Impaired and other individuals in the library’s homebound program. (This grant is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.)
Kudos to Julie Hammond from KPL’s Youth Services Department for designing the logo on the bags! And, of course, all of the purchased DVDs are available at the library. |
