The purpose of the Kirkwood Public Library Foundation is to enrich, but not replace, traditional tax-based support through private fundraising from individuals, businesses and other foundations. The Foundation is dedicated to building an endowment which will ensure that Kirkwood Public Library continues to meet the rapidly changing needs of library patrons by providing quality library services, facilities and access.
The Foundation was created in 1996 as a nonprofit organization and an independent fund-raising entity. It is governed by a nine member board, including seven volunteer citizens elected by the board, the Director of the Library and the Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees. Members generally serve two three-year terms.

An independent, charitable organization, the Foundation solicits, receives and administers gifts for the Library's benefit. Some gifts have been used to fund projects, enhancements and improvements to collections and services that the Library could not otherwise afford thorough its annual operating budget. Currently, the Foundation is pursuing an emphasis on increasing its Endowment Fund. Private contributions from individuals and organizations have helped to increase the Fund over the last ten years. Prudent investment has caused the Fund to grow to its recent level of approximately $325,000. Under current Board policy, earnings of the Fund are added to principal in order to build the Fund to a level sufficient to provide significant income for the support of the Library.
